The Birthplace of Mozart and the Sound of Music: Exploring Salzburg’s Glorious Past

The vibrant city of Salzburg has a long, rich history that reaches back over 1,500 years. Salzburg’s Fortress Hohensalzburg stands atop Festungsberg Hill as one of Europe’s largest medieval castles. It dates all the way back to 1077 and continues to offer visitors a glimpse into what life must have been like hundreds of years ago. Tourists can enjoy breathtaking views from the top of the fortress, as well as take part in guided tours that explore its remarkable architecture.

In addition to its fortifications, Salzburg’s castle houses several historical artifacts and monuments, including works of art, tapestries, armories, and torture chambers. And while much of the original structure still remains intact, certain sections were rebuilt or expanded upon in the late 19th century to add more living space.

Musical Legends of Salzburg

When discussing the storied history of Salzburg, one cannot forget to mention two of its most famous residents: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Maria von Trapp. Both icons were born and raised in Salzburg and had deep ties to the area throughout their lives.

Mozart, who began composing at age five, created some of his earliest and most celebrated works here in Salzburg. Today, visitors can experience his legacy firsthand by visiting some of the many sites associated with him, such as his birthplace, where he composed pieces like Don Giovanni and Le Nozze di Figaro.

Maria von Trapp, who made her fictional fame singing in the legendary family band, was also born in Salzburg and famously sang songs like “Do Re Mi” while running through the meadows around Mirabell Palace. Although the real von Trapps never actually lived in a palace, fans of The Sound of Music can find the famous movie location at Nonnberg Abbey near Salzburg.
